Supporting war recovery in Lebanon

Despite the war that has been ravaging southern Lebanon since early March, many in the Palestinian refugee camp of El-Bass in the city of Tyre were in a festive mood on May 27. The date marked the first day of Eid al-Adha, the Muslim feast of the sacrifice. That was until an Israeli missile struck a building at the edge of the camp the same evening, causing casualties and severe damage to several nearby homes.

The explosion blew the roof off the Family Guidance Centre, run by NORWAC partner the National Institute for Social Care and Vocational Training, also known as Beit Atfal as-Sumoud. The centre was established with NORWAC’s support twenty years ago and provides a range of specialized health services and activities to the children of the Palestinian local community.

Thanks to private donations to NORWAC, we have been able to support the centre in the rebuilding after the damage caused by the attack. After having fled the camp, many of its inhabitants have now returned, explains the director of the centre, Ms Nivin Al-Murshed (picture). When visiting the centre recently, NORWAC found the family guidance team back on their feet and ready to serve the children once again.
