Workshop with Syrian partners

Posted on Jun 5, 2014

NORWAC recently participated in a workshop with partner organization, Watan, in Gaziantep. Representing NORWAC were Country Director for Syria, John Eivind Jensen, and Senior Consultants, Dr. Belal Al-Jabri and Dr. Nabil Karah.

Watan/Khayr has since 2012 been NORWAC’s partner organization for humanitarian work inside Syria. They run an extensive humanitarian operation inside the country, including field hospitals, mobile clinics and support for medical personnel. The main office of Watan is located in Gaziantep, Turkey, with branch offices located in Jordan and Lebanon. Watan is an activist organization with objectives and values that are easy for NORWAC to identify with. They work in large parts of the areas not controlled by the Assad regime. They have shown remarkable ability to deliver health care services in areas of limited access, said John Eivind Jensen, responsible for NORWAC activities in Syria.

NORWAC finance the running costs of several field hospitals in Syria. The Norwegian Broadcasting Corporation (NRK) visited one the hospitals (video posted below). This hospital was later evacuated – and then bombed by the Syrian Arab Air Force. None of the patients or staff were injured, but there was substantial material damage.
